Pediatric Eye Pearls: From Mark Dorfman, M.D. and Scott Cardone, M.D. When should my child have an eye examination? Drs. Dorfman and Cardone recommend a comprehensive examination by the age of five. A child’s visual system is critically developing during the early years of life and amblyopia ("lazy eye") can only be cured if detected early. |

LASIK Pearls: From David Jones, M.D., Ph.D We offer the latest in custom, wave-front guided excimer laser procedures for superior visual outcomes. With these newer technologies, we are able to treat most prescriptions including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism with excellent results. If you would like to reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses, please call our Refractive Surgery Coordinator at (954) 245-2798, to schedule an evaluation to determine if you are a candidate for PRK, LASEK, or LASIK. |
Cataract Surgery Pearls: From Arthur Fishman, M.D. Once a cataract has formed, the only way to restore clear vision is to remove the clouded lens and replace it with a clear, permanent implant, called an intraocular lens (IOL). There are many types of intraocular lenses and each patient is individually assessed to determine which lens best fits his/her lifestyle. New advances in technology afford us the opportunity to implant lenses that allow patients to see both far and up close. As opposed to the traditional mono-focal lenses, these new multi-focal lenses significantly reduce the dependence of glasses post cataract surgery. |
Blepharoplasty Pearls: From Joel Sandberg, M.D. Blepharoplasty, commonly known as lid surgery, is one of the most common and satisfying procedures for both women and men. It is done in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia with sedation as desired by the patient. Usually, this procedure is considered cosmetic, however, if the excess skin rests on the eyelashes and/or covers the eye causing a loss of upper field of vision, it may be covered by insurance. |
Macular Degeneration Pearls: From Patrick Rubsamen, M.D. The good news for retina patients over the last couple of years has been the development of injectable intraocular drugs. A variety of retinal conditions now can be stabilized or improved by the use of intraocular steroids, Avastin and Lucentis. These drugs used alone or in combination are used to treat wet macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and certain vascular occlusions. Monitoring of these conditions has also become much easier with the use of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). OCT is a very sensitive instrument used for detecting swelling or subretinal fluid involving the retina and is crucial in both the detection and monitoring of macular conditions. These advancements have revolutionized retinal care and are available to patients at Eye Surgery Associates. |
Medication Pearls: From Lee Duffner, M.D. Whether for glaucoma, infection, allergy or other indica- tions, eye drops will be more effective if you apply gentle fingertip pressure to the inner end of the eyelids next to the nose for one or two minutes after instilling the drops. |
Contact Lens Pearls: From Mark Hart, L.D.O: New designs in soft multifocal contacts are allowing adults to be free of bifocal glasses. Mark Hart is currently fitting these new contacts and they are far surpassing the ability of “mono vision lens wear” at both near and distance for our population over 40 years of age. The children of our practice are enjoying the new changes in soft contact lenses (silicone hydrogels), which allow for increased wearing time and comfort. |
Glaucoma Pearls: From Guy Angella, M.D. What are the symptoms of glaucoma? Usually, there are no symptoms. Almost all glaucoma patients are diagnosed during a routine exam when they have no complaints about their eyes or their vision. This is one reason why regular eye exams are important. |
Optical Pearls: From Philip Gordon, L.D.O: Transition VI lenses have arrived! Transition lenses give you visual comfort in any light. Indoors, the lenses are clear and outdoors, in bright sunlight, they get dark, quickly and automatically. Transition lenses are available in polycarbonate protective lenses for children and progressive lenses. Progressive lenses allow you to see clearly at all distances - far away, mid-range, and up close - with no hard divisions in the lens as in bifocals. Presidential Optical specializes in Varilux Physio, the most advanced progressive lens, which gives you unsurpassed sharpness and comfort through wave front digital technology. |
